Tuesday Trivia–TEXAS and Link Party

Welcome to TEXAS, the Lone Star State…

 IMG_3327

Texas joined the United States in 1845 as the 28th state.

Amarillo 3

I had to start off Texas with a few pictures of Amarillo, where we have been snowed in the last couple of days, with the roads closed!

1. The capital is Austin, which is considered the
live music capital of the world!

The capital building opened in 1888 and is made from Texas Pink Granite.
The dome stands seven feet higher than our nation’s capital in Washington, D.C.

2. Houston is the largest city.

3. Texas is the 2nd most populous and the 2nd largest of the 50 states.

4. Six different flags have flown over Texas during its history. Spain, France, Mexico, the Confederacy, and the Republic of Texas all claimed Texas as its own throughout the years. Then of course the United States.

5. Laredo is the world’s largest inland port.

6. The Tyler Municipal Rose Garden is the world's largest rose garden. It contains 38,000 rose bushes representing 500 varieties of roses set in a 22-acre garden.

7.  Dr Pepper was invented in Waco in 1885.
There is no period after the Dr in Dr Pepper.

8. Jalapeno is the state pepper. Jalapeno Pepper Jelly originated in Lake Jackson and was first marketed in 1978.

9. Guadalupe Peak is the highest natural point in Texas, with an elevation of 8,751 ft. It is located in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

10. The Alamo is located in San Antonio. It is where Texas defenders fell to Mexican General Santa Anna and the phrase “Remember the Alamo” originated. The Alamo is considered the cradle of Texas liberty and the state’s most popular historic site.

FYI, the official dish in Texas is chili.

  5. hi Wanda Ann, Such and interesting post, I never knew what 6 flags meant, or that Laredo was even a port much less a big one! There is so much we don't know about our very own country. I look forward to every Tuesday now, I love all the photos and facts!

  6. Thanks for hosting! I've traveled very little, so it is always interesting to learn about other states, especially the food they are known for :-) I've linked up Hamburgers in Gravy (in the crock pot) and Jalapeno Salsa, since it is the state pepper!

  8. Wanda Ann, I am so excited I can finally share something related to the selected state. I love Texas. I have worked there, lived there and visit often. I am sharing two food post Divorced Eggs and Chicken Tortilla Soup. Both recipes I learned from living and dining in Georgetown, TX. It is a beautiful part of Central Texas, just of the edge of the Hill Country. So beautiful in the spring when the blue bonnets and poppies come out. Thanks so much for hosting and picking Texas! Have a great week!

  20. Texas is by far my favorite state. But snowed in in Amarillo would not be my favorite place to be! I brought over a Texas spicy Sloppy Joe Cornbread Casserole to warm you up.

We're having a party at Tumbleweed Contessa and this would be a perfect link to tell everybody about all the great parts of this great state!
Hope to see you there. http://www.tumbleweedcontessa.com/blog/whatd-you-do-this-weekend-4/
